This June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and on 6/19/21 the Dementia/ Alzheimer’s Raised Garden Beds were opened at Will Rogers Park & Gardens on N. Portland & NW 36th in OKC and had it’s Grand Opening… on 9/19/21 Providing a special place to Garden with Family or Professional Caregivers for loved ones with
Dementia/Alzheimer’s.
What is going on now since the Grade Opening in 2021?
On May 20th there will be a Garden Festival in Will Rogers Park 9am to 3pm (see flyer) Everyone Welcome!!
The Brain Child of Dr. Germaine Odenheimer for the Memory Raised Gardens (pictured center) is a Geriatric Neurologist, Professor Emeritus at OU College of Medicine, Master Gardener and Advocate for those suffering with dementia. She cared for her mother with dementia who is the inspiration behind these gardens a Will Rogers.
Herb Magley (Pictured left) At his own cost, he has travelled the country giving speeches of support to thousands of Alzheimer’s caregivers. having is own wife diagnosed at age 54 and has been a family caregiver to her till her graduation to heaven. He has also lost 5 other family members to the disease.
The purpose of the Will Rogers Raised Gardens is to give the loved one diagnose a place to work with their hands in soil and plant beautiful things and a time for family or Professional Caregivers a outlet of expression!
Dr Odenheimer was faculty at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, University of South Carolina and Harvard Medical School before joining OU College of Medicine to develop a geriatric curriculum for medical students.
She serves as advisor to the State Council on Aging and Long Term Care Ombudsman sub-committee, provides ongoing support to Alzheimer’s support groups and has been named to Oklahoma’s “Healthy Brain Initiative Coalition.”
Herb Magley has lost 5 family members to Alzheimer’s, including his best friend and wife, diagnosed at age 54. Herb was so profoundly affected on their 11-year journey that he became a passionate supporter of Alzheimer’s family caregivers. At his own cost, he has travelled the country giving speeches of support to thousands of Alzheimer’s caregivers. He was elected to the local Alzheimer’s Assn Board and serves on the Advocacy Committee, meeting with our legislators to increase research funding to find a cure. Herb chaired the OKC “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” the major fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, and has started 7 support groups in OKC.

We “Zoomed” in the Honorable Lance Robertson and we will be discussing what are “Listening Sessions” and when do they meet? Though out the State of Oklahoma for our 50+ & Their Adult Children! Oklahoma is developing a Master (or MultiSector) Plan on Aging, a bold commitment to better serving aging Oklahomans today and the decade to come. We would like to provide an overview and really stress the need for stakeholder feedback during the week of May 8th through May 12th, 2023 (listening sessions being held in 5 locations statewide).

The Honorable Lance Robertson is the former US Assistant Secretary for Aging and Administrator of the federal agency responsible for 140 million older Americans and people with disabilities, the HHS Administration for Community Living. For a decade prior to federal service, he served as Oklahoma’s Director of Aging Services. He is currently a Director with Guidehouse.
